Births
William Linder was born on November 30, 1795 in Barsham, Suffolk, a son of James Linder and Mary Parrett. He was baptized in the local church the following spring on April 17, 1796. This information comes from the Parish Register in Barsham.
Also from the register we know that William had an older brother John and an older sister Elizabeth who were baptized on July 13, 1794.We know little of the origin of William's first wife, Lucy Haws. An entry in the IGI records the birth of Lucy on November 10, 1795 in Gisleham, Suffolk, a daughter of Isaac Hawes and Elizabeth Bennet. The record of their marriage says that Lucy was from Beccles, Suffolk which was the main centre in the district about five miles east of Barsham.
William's second wife, Charlotte Girling, was a daughter of William Girling and Mary Cattermole and was christened on March 29, 1812. She was born in Mendham, Suffolk.
Marriages
- On November 26, 1819 William Linder and Lucy Haws were married in Barsham, Suffolk.
- There were no known children born from this union.
- Following the death of Lucy, William Linder now a widower married Charlotte Girling on July 23, 1835 in Barsham. The marriage was by banns and the witnesses were William Love and his wife Elizabeth (nee Linder). Elizabeth must have been William's older sister.
- Charlotte had two daughters born before her marriage to William: a daughter Sarah Ann in 1829 and a daughter Matilda in 1833. The two girls used the 'Linder' name in the 1841 British census but afterward they reverted to their birth name of 'Girling'.
- There were six children from the second marriage that we know about, all born in Barsham: Rebecca (1836), William (1838), James (1842), John (1845), George (1848) and Emma (1850-1850).
Deaths
William Linder is the head of the household in the 1841 census in Barsham with an age listed as 46 years. The 1851 census shows the family living in Barsham when william is 60 years old and in 1861 the family has moved to Beccles and William is now 70. In 1871 William and Charlotte are still in Beccles and William is on parish relief at age 76. William's death at age 84 is recorded in the Civil Registration in the first Quarter of 1878 in the Wangford District of Suffolk (likely Beccles).
Lucy Haws was buried in Barsham on May 1, 1834 at age 38 years. The circumstances are unknown.
Charlotte Girling is in the 1841 census, age 30. In 1851 'Sharlot Linder' is the wife of the family at age 40. By 1861 when Charlotte is 50, they had moved to Beccles and in 1871 she is 50 and still living with William in Beccles. The census of 1881 tells us of Charlotte Linder, age 70 and born in Mendham, who is working as a laundress and living in Halesworth, Suffolk with son-in-law James Woodgate (age 48) and his wife Sara A. Woodgate (age 51). By then her husband had died and she is living with her step-daughter. The Civil Registration records the death of Charlotte Linder in the September quarter of 1886 in Wangford District, Suffolk at age 74.
